Biography

Martha (Kimball) Fowler immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Martha was born about 1629, the daughter of Richard Kimball and Ursula Scott, and came to New England with them in the ship Elizabeth in 1634, when she is noted to be about 5 years of age. ^{[1] [2] [3] [4] [5]}

Marriage

She married Joseph Fowler about 1649 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts. Joseph was baptized at St. Mary, Marlborough on September 27, 1626, son of Phillip and Mary Fowler. ^{[2] [5] [6] [7]}

On January 12, 1650/1, Joseph Fowler, husbandman of Ipswich, sold land and cattle to Richard Kimball Sr. 'my father in law.' ^{[5] [2]}

On October 12, 1650, Martha, wife of Joseph Fowler of Ipswich, was presented for 'pernicious lying' and defamation of her sister Dutch. ^[6]

Joseph Fowler was killed by the Indians at Squakeheage in September, 1675 and his widow Martha married second Ezekiel Rogers ? 2nd marriage needs confirmation. ^[1]

1. Philip Fowler born December 25, 1648; died on November 16, 1715, his grave stating his age as '67 years, wanting 38 days'; married Elizabeth Herrick January 23, 1672. ^{[1] [2]} Phillip was adopted by his grandfather Phillip Fowler Sr., with the consent of his parents, Joseph and Martha on August 18, 1651. On December 23, 1668, Phillip Sr. deeded his dwelling house and lands, to be granted after his decease, to his adopted grandson Phillip. ^{[6] [8]}
2. Joseph Fowler ^[1] born about 1653 as he deposed in May 1672, as being about 19 years of age; died at Wenham, Massachusetts on February 10, 1717/8 ^[9]; married Elizabeth Hutton. ^{[1] [2]} Joseph was to have the dwellling house and lands of his grandfather Phillip, if his brother Phillip died without an heir. ^[6]
3. John born about 1655; married first Sarah ___ and was of Ipswich; married second, Hannah Scott of Springfield, Massachusetts on October 31, 1695. ^{[1] [2] [10]} John was third is succession of his grandfather Phillip's house and lands, if his brothers Phillip and Joseph died without leaving heirs. ^[6]
4. Mary born ___; married John Briers/Bears on January 20, 1673/4 at Gloucester. ^{[1] [2] [11]}
5. ?Martha born ___; thought to be Martha, wife of Edward Kneeland, as he mentions his 'brother Joseph Fowler of Wenham' in his will and 'brother Phillip Fowler' in a deed. ^[12]
