This information is a paraphrase of the Herbert Kimzey genealogy book on the Kimsey family. Herbert Kimzey cited family lore and stories, and that's where the Scottish connection came from. It's much more likely the stories related to the McClure family, not the Kimseys at all. Researching the Kimsey name, it comes from England, and goes back at least to the 1500's. The "z" in the name came from county clerks, census takers misspelling the name at the Buncombe County seat in Ashville, NC where the family patriarch lived and died. I've personally viewed the misspelling, even of Kimsey siblings names when taken at the same sitting, likely due to their own inability to read and write. Different clerks wrote down the names as they phonetically sounded--this from the county clerk in Asheville, when I visited the court archives there in the mid-1970's. There were no 'Kimzey's' until the misspelling in Asheville. Kimsey is not a derivative of McKenzie or anything close. Benjamin Kimsey I was listed as Kimsey in the Revolutionary War, and has relatives from 200 years earlier somewhere in England. That is the task, find the link in England to Benjamin Kimsey 1.
