Nancy was born in Arkansas in 1844 to James Preston King and Rebecca May. She married John Garrett at age 17 and five months after the wedding, her husband enlisted with the Confederacy. After 1878, he moved the family from Arkansas to Texas where she spent the rest of her life. Nancy had 11 children and passed away in 1916 at 71 years old.
