There is a Jeremiah KING, born in Wexford, Wexford, Ireland, listed among the Chelsea Pensioners, which he would have qualified to be. Also showing in the same census a Sarah KING living in London nearby who could be his wife. I think it was the 1851 or 1861 census.

- On his son's marriage certificate Jeremiah's wife is named as Sarah ATHERLAY, but the spelling of the surname is anyone's guess, with an Irish accent. - Place and date of Jeremiah & Sarah's marriage unknown but must be between his 1823 discharge and Oct 1826 when son George was born. It may have been anywhere from Kent to Dublin.

August 2003 My research in my father's mother's line has been interesting - I had left it as too hard but decided to have another go and got into military records. I had only known that my gt grandmother had come to NZ abt 1861 with her parents as a toddler and her father was Sgt KING in the Army and they lived in the Napier Barracks. No first names. Got her death cert and it gave her mother's maiden surname only - no 1st name - hopeless. I went to the Napier Museum Archives room and the Archivist was very helpful. She had a little booklet on the Regiments in NZ and when and where they were at various times. She said only three regiments ever occupied the Napier Barracks, so that narrowed the field somewhat. We worked out from when my gt grandmother was supposed to have been born (at The Curragh, Military Camp outside Dublin), and the movements of the 3 regiments and it seemed as if it must be the 14th Regt to fit in with what little I knew. In London in 1982 I went to the PRO at Kew and looked up the records for the 14th Regiment. As I didn't know the first name of my Sgt KING they let me look at the whole box of actual records for the Regiment. I was amazed as now they only let people see a film or copy of such records. These WO/97 records were in poor condition but in that box were 3 George KINGs but only one of them had the right sounding hair and skin and eye colouring and he was the only one to take his discharge from the Army with the intention of living in Napier, New Zealand, where I grew up. So it had to be him. His name was George and he was born in Dublin in 1826. Now I know why my father's 2nd oldest brother was named George - after his Gt Grandfather. I bought a copy of the military record called a WO / 97 and left it at that for over 10 yrs. Two months ago I had another look at it as it was the least developed line in my ancestry. I had seen a possible marriage in 1859 in the IGI (George KING & Jane HALL) but it was in Stirling, Scotland so I didn't think it was them. A friend was visiting Scotland in 2004 - I asked if she could check this Marriage record while at New Register House in Edinburgh and see if there was anything to identify the George KING in it as mine or to clearly state he was not. She emailed me back a pdf file with the marriage in it straight from the registers and it was Sgt George KING of the 14th Regiment of Foot. So I knew it was my man. George KING married Jane HALL. His parents and her mother were deceased but 3 of them were named. Brilliant. Married 1 January 1859. That record came from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk<http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk> the pay site for such BMDs. My friend sent it to me as a gift. His father was Jeremiah KING, occupation: Messman, deceased. I thought it sounded as if he was in the Army too so hunted for him in the www.pro.gov.uk <http://www.pro.gov.uk> site (Kew) and there he was and born in County Wexford. So I got his military record - he had over 21 years in the Army, 16 of them in India with the 80th Regt and then with the 53rd Regt. I then Googled for the Regiments and up came a wonderful history of the 80th Regt of Foot telling where and what and when in India.

British rule became established in eastern India around the mid-eighteenth century, and by the early part of the nineteenth century, the British had tightened their grip over considerable portions of the country. The suppression of the Indian revolt of 1857-58 ushered in a period, which lasted ninety years, when India was directly under Crown rule.
