Biography

Family history and his tombstone provide his vital stats and place of birth. Written records start with 1828 Rhea County, Tennessee Tax lists. He married Martha Mee about that time, perhaps in Bradley County. They moved to Georgia during the Gold Rush and he served as Sheriff of Dahlonega for two terms and ran a tannery. He moved his family west first to Helena, Arkansas and then to Santa Fe, New Mexico where he was involved in trading, mining, and transportation of goods. He led a group of settlers to Los Angeles in 1852 and laid out the town of Lexington that later became El Monte. He died in 1855 in a gunfight with Micajah Johnson.
