1823 Born John was born 25th January 1823 and christened 16th February 1823 at St Peter's church in Monkwearmouth. [1] [2]

1841 Census The 1841 census lists John living with his parents and siblings in John Street, Monkwearmouth. [3]

1846 Married John and Amelia were married in Sunderland in 1846. [4]

1851 Census The 1851 census has John and Amelia living in Williamson Street in Sunderland. [5]. Their children (and nurse) are on the next page of the census, so on another Family Search page - [6]

1859 Immigration John and Amelia and children John, Robert and Amelia sailed to New Zealand on the Cashmere. The voyage left London on June 28th 1859 and arrived at Lyttelton on October 11th, a voyage of 105 days. It has been reported that overcrowding on the ship resulted in 16 deaths - mainly children. [7] Christchurch Library has digitised the Passenger List [8] John's brother Joseph and his wife and daughter also sailed on this ship although the trip was a tragedy for Joseph losing his wife and daughter and another daughter born during the voyage. [9]

1895 Death John was buried in the Addington Cemetery on 17 May 1895 [10] He left a will naming daughter Amelia and sons John and Robert. [11]
