Biography

Cleveland Hosea King was born January 25, 1891 in Georgia. He was the son of Joseph B. King and Susan Clay King.

On the 1900 Census, he was listed as a 9 year old, white male living in Smithfield, Carroll County, Georgia with his parents and siblings: John T. King, Martha A. King, Charles A. King, Mary E. King, William D. King, Charity A. King, and Joseph L. King. According to the census, he was attending school and could read and write. His birthplace was listed as Georgia, as were the birthplaces of his parents. [1]

During the 1911-1912 school year at Carrollton High School, Cleveland King was elected the Corresponding Secretary of the Eumenean Debating Society.[2]

Cleveland King graduated from Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Carroll County, Georgia, USA on 28 May 1913. The graduating class had 17 students, and it was the 2nd largest to graduate up until that time. He was a member of a quartette who performed during the graduation ceremony. Others in the quartette were Lee Morris, Geneva Bass, and Grady Perryman.[3][4]

In August of 1913, he closed the school at Mt. Pleasant in Carroll County, Georgia where he had been teaching in order to attend Mercer College.[5]

On February 12, 1915, he performed in Carroll County, Georgia, USA with the Mercer College Glee Club. The Glee Club had just returned from an annual tour to Florida. Cleveland King had been a member of the Glee Club for two years.[6]

He opened school in Carroll County, Georgia according to the Carroll Free Press in November 1915. There were 57 students present.[7]

On 4 July 1917, he was scheduled to conduct a prayer meeting at the First Baptist Church in Carroll County, Georgia.[8]

According to a newspaper blurb in the Carroll Free Press on 6 Sept 1917, Mr Cleveland King left last week for Lilly, Ga., to take charge of the school at that place.[9]He spent the Christmas holidays with family in Carroll County, Georgia, USA in December 1917.[10] In April of 1918, he came home from teaching in Lilly, Georgia, to visit "home folks" for a weekend.[11]

According to a newspaper blurb, It stated: Mr. Cleveland King has been here this week from Camp Gordon.[12]

On the 1920 Census, he was listed as a 28 year old, single, white male living in Vienna, Dooley County, Georgia. He was a boarder in the home of Henry J. Morgan. He could read and write, and he was a public school teacher. According to the census, his birthplace and the birthplaces of his parents were listed as Georgia.[13]

In a newspaper article on 2 Mar 1920 in the Carroll Free Press, Mr. Cleveland King is visiting home folks near Temple this week.[14]

On 2 Aug 1921, a newspaper blurb in the Carroll Free Press stated that Cleveland King attended a rook party given by Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Kinney in Temple, Carroll County, Georgia, USA.[15] The article stated: Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Kinney gave a rook party Thursday in honor of Miss Rose Byars, of Rome, Ga., who is the guest of Miss Loyal McCollister. After the games, sliced watermelon was served. Those present were: Misses Rose Byar, Flora Evans, Loyal McCollister, Ella Stovall, Allie Barnett, Grace and Elsie Kirk, Margaret Adams; Messrs. Paul and Lewis Cobb, Uuma McCollister, Earl Barnett, of Florence, S. C., Omer Sharp, Cleveland King, Loyd Aderholt, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey McCain, and Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Kinney.

In the Carroll Free Press on 19 Oct 1922, an engage notice appeared for Cleveland King and Emma Virginia Connell. The notice stated: Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Connell, of Temple, announce the engagement of their daughter, Emma Virginia, to Mr. Cleveland Hosea King, of Cumming, formerly of Temple, the marriage to be solemnized in November.[16]

On the 1930 Census, he was listed as a 39 year old, married, white male living in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia with his wife, Emma Virginia. They were boarders of Lou C. Powell, and they paid $22.50 monthly. He could read and write, and Cleveland and Emma Virginia were public school teachers. His birthplace and the birthplaces of his parents were listed as Georgia on this census. Cleveland was a veteran of World War 1.[17]

On the 1940 Census, he was listed as a 49 year old, married, white male living in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia, with his wife, Emma. According to the census, they were also living in Cobb County in 1935. They rented their home for $8 a month. Cleveland's birth place was listed as Georgia, and the highest level of education that he completed was five years of college. He was working as a school principal.[18]

He passed away August 20, 1984 in Cobb County, Georgia.[19] He was buried at Asbury Cemetery in Temple, Carroll County, Georgia. [20]
