Biography

No birth record for Henry Stevenson has been found. His birthdate has been estimated based on his marriage in 1735 and presuming he was about 25 years old at the time. He was the son of Edward Stevenson and Mary King.

Marriage & Family

The marriage of Henry Stevenson and Jemima Merryman by license on 19 JUN 1735 is recorded in St. Paul's Parish in lower Baltimore County. The births of the following children are also recorded in the same parish:

Ruth b. 15 SEP 1735 (she died young)
Jemima b. 7 JAN 1736
Henry b. 2 MAR 1739
Charles b. 14 DEC 1740
Ruth b. 20 JAN 1748
William b. 1 JAN 1750[1]

Four other children are proved to be members of this family because they are called brother & sister in the will of Jemima Stevenson or mentioned in deeds:

Mary b. abt 1742 m. Thomas Meguire
Anne b. abt. 1744 m. Richard Taylor[2]
Nicholas b. abt. 1746
Josias b. abt. 1750

Property

On 2 MAR 1735 Edward Stevenson of Edward conveyed to his brother, Henry, 202 acres part of Addition to Fellowship as a deed of gift for brotherly love. The land bordered the larger tract called Fellowship.[3]

Henry surveyed some land in Frederick County and applied for a warrant to patent the property on 28 OCT 1747. He did not complete the patent process at that time and later resurveyed the property to claim vacant land adjacent to the original survey for a total of 420 acres. This land was called Darey and was patented on 3 JUL 1759.[4] The land in Frederick County was given to his two eldest sons, Henry Jr. & Charles, soon after the patent process was completed. [5]

Instead of writing a will, Henry gave his farm to three of his youngest children. On 20 JUL 1786 he conveyed parts of his property called the Additon to Fellowship to his sons, Nicholas & Josias Stevenson and his daughter Jemima Stevenson in three separate deeds.[6] No probate records or death record for him as been found.

I, too, am a descendant of Edward Stevenson & Mary King. And, many thanks to Victoria E. for making available a copy of the Barnes' publication. I, also, have never found a middle name for any of this couples' children, except the aforementioned (my link) Richard King Stevenson.

Thanks also extended to Connie Daniels Graves for adopting the William Stevenson file and correcting the name...no known documentation of William's name including any middle name. Documentation in these kinds of cases is crucial and always much appreciated.

Stevenson-6787 and Stevenson-5174 appear to represent the same person because: Same names, same parents, married to same woman.

I adopted this profile to correct the middle name and added one source. Can someone add some more?

Thanks.

HI Ben, Just a reminder--this profiles LNAB was Stevenson. I think perhaps King may have been entered in error for the LNAB? Maybe you could correct this? See: Descendants of Edward and Mary Stevenson of Baltimore County, Maryland by Robert Barnes, p 12.

Thanks!

I descend from Henry Stevenson's line and I have found no evidence that he had a middle name at all. The only sibling with the middle name of King is Richard King Stevenson.
