Jane was born in 1823. She was christened 20 Sep 1823 in Hutton Cranswick.[1]
There is a Jane King, 15, living in Middle Street, Driffield, Great, Driffield Union, Yorkshire, England in 1841. The record suggests that she was born in 1826 in Yorkshire, England. She is living in Christopher Hooper's, 30, Inn Keeper, household working as a Female Labourer. Also in residence are Ann Steward, 11, Mary Kemp, 8, John Kemp, 40, John Marshall , 25, Alice Williamson, 15, and Hannah Peck, 10. [2]
By 1871, the family is residing in Scugog Township. Jane Hope is 46 and a member of the Methodist church. Children residing in the household include: Charles, 20, farmer; Phebe, 15, going to school; Lettie, 13, going to school, David Wakefield, 10. going to school; John A., 7, going to school.[3]
In 1881, the family is still residing in Scugog Township. Jane Hope, 55, is a member of the Methodist church. Children living in residence include: Charles Hope, 27, Letty Hope, 22, Wakefield Hope, 20, and John Hope, 17. Eliza Sweetman, 11, is also in residence.[4]
The 1891 census reveals that Jane Hope is 65 and a member of the Methodist church. The census also suggests that Jane cannot read/write. Also living in residence are her childrenCharles, 40, farmer, married; Wakefield, 30, farmer; John, 27, farmer; Lettie Demara, 33, married, daughter-in-law, and her grand-child Jessie Demara, 9, grand-son.[5]
According to the 1901 Census of Canada, Jane Hope is 76, and she was born on 20 Dec 1824 in England. The record suggests that she immigrated to Canada in 1849 and that she is a member of the Methodist church. The census also suggests that she cannot read/write [6]
(1) Martha King, daughter of Jane, single woman, was baptized on 23 Apr 1845 in Hutton Cranswick[7] At the time of Martha's birth, Jane would have been approximately 22-years-old.
(2) William Hope, son of Thomas and Jane, was baptized on 20 Nov 1848 in Hutton Cranswick[8] At the time of his birth, Jane would have been approximately 25-years-old.
(3) According to census records, Charles was born on 10 May 1852 in Ontario[9]. However, the 1911 census suggests Mar 1853.[10]. Other census records suggest he was born in 1851.
(4) Mary Jane's grave marker indicates that she was born on 13 Sep 1853.[11]
(5) Pheobe's grave marker indicates that she was born on 11 May 1856.[12]
(6) Lettie Hope's death record suggests that she was born on 11 Aug 1858[13]
(7) David (Wakefield) Hope's death record suggests that he was born abt. 1861[14] The 1901 census record suggests that his possible birth date was 6 Mar 1861[15]
(8) John Albert Hope's death record suggests that he was born abt 1863.[16] The 1901 census record suggests that his possible birth date was 14 Feb 1864.[17] At the time of John's birth, Jane would have been approximately 41-years-old.
Jane (nee King) Hope died on 28 Jun 1901. The cause of death was paralysis from a cerebral embolism followed by pneumonia.[18]
