Biography

Heman was baptized 15 Oct 1727 at the Brewster Church, Harwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts[1]. He was the son of Ebenezer King (1700-bef.1790) and Mercy (Merrick) King (abt.1704-abt.1775)[2].

Ebenezer married Elizabeth Cartwright. Revolutionary War service. Resident of Southeast, NY.[1]

Residence and Census

February 1755, Heman King appeared in the southern district of the Dutchess County tax lists (page 272).

In 1772, "Hamon King" was listed in Fredericksburg on Dutchess County tax lists (page 287).

1790 US Census: Heman was in Fredericksontown, Dutchess County, New York. There were 2 males over 16, 2 males under 16, and 3 females in the household. Next door was his son, Heman King Jr.[3]

1800 US Census: Heman "Thing" was in South East, Dutchess County, New York. In the household were: Males: 1<10; 0 10-15; 0 16-25; 1 26-44; 1 45+. Females: 1<10; 2 10-15; 0 16-25; 1 26-44; 1 45+.[4]

1810 US Census: Heman appears to have been living with Heman King, Jr. in South East, Dutchess County, New York. In the household were: Males: 1<10; 1 10-15; 1 16-25; 1 26-44; 1 45+. Females: 3<10; 1 10-15; 2 16-25; 0 26-44; 2 45+.[5]

Will and Death

Heman signed his will 28 March 1805 in Dutchess County, New York; it was probated 30 April 1812 in Dutchess County[6]. He mentioned in his will his wife, Elizabeth, and the following children:

  1. Heman: Heman King Jr. (abt.1752-abt.1820)
  2. Stephen: Stephen King (1756-bef.1828)
  3. Phebe
  4. Rhoda: Rhoda (King) Dakin (1752-1839)
  5. Alice
  6. Mercy
  7. Elizabeth: Elizabeth (King) Cole (1766-1858)
  8. Ebenezer (died 1792)
  9. Jedutha (died 1789)

Heman died 12 Jan 1812 in Dutchess County, New York, but is buried in the Ellis Cemetery in current day Putnam County, along with his wife, Elizabeth, and their son Jedutha[7]. His headstone inscription reads: In memory of Heman King who died 12 Jan 1812 aged 85 years.
