Biography

William H. Kinne, former sheriff of San Mateo county and for over 40 years a resident of Redwood City, passed away suddenly at his home on Phelps street Saturday night [June 25th];

'Pop’ Kinne, as he was familiarly known to his hundreds of friends was born in Nova Scotia in 1836. He came to San Francisco in 1859, when he was 23 years of age. His first business venture was the operation of a large dairy in partnership with John Donald Daly, at what is now known as Daly City.

In 1880 Kinne was elected sheriff of San Mateo county, after one of the most exciting elections in the history of the county, defeating Harry Hatch of Half Moon Bay, now a resident of San Mateo. Following his election as sheriff Kinne severed partnership with Daly, and moved to Redwood City. He made a splendid officer and was re-elected for five succeeding terms, being finally defeated in 1892 by the late Phil McEvoy.

After his retirement from office, Mr. Kinne operated the Capitol Hotel on Broadway, then a three-story brick building, for a number of years, later moving to Willits, Mendocino county. He returned to Redwood in a few years and purchased the Capitol Hotel from the late W. Z. Price, father of city clerk W. A. Price, retiring from business in 1906. At the time of his death, Mr. Kinne was 85 years old. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nettie S. Kinne, and three nieces, Mrs. Ida Johnson of San Francisco, Mrs. Charles Hedges of Los Angeles, and one residing in Seattle, Washington. findagrave.com
