Joseph was born in Tennessee in 1815 to War of 1812 veteran Clinton Kirby and Mariah Pauline Trice. His father moved the family to Alabama by 1830, where Joseph enlisted to fight in the Seminole Wars. Afterwards, he bought property, married Susan Catherine Trice and had his first child before moving his family to Mississippi in 1840. Joseph passed away in 1858 in Arkansas at 42 years old.
