Henry Hudson Kirby of Fort Smith died suddenly on Monday, April 5, 2010 while talking on the phone with his wife, Thy (Cathy), who he married on January 7, 2010 after a decade of courtship.

Kirby was born in Little Rock on April 24, 1938 and was raised in Harrison near the families' Boone County homesteads.

He graduated from Harrison High School and continued his education at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville where he earned B.A. Chemistry and B.S. Electrical Engineering.

Henry was a retired plant engineer and held positions during his career at James River Dixie, Therma-Tru, Mobil Chemical, General Tire, Razorback Plastics and Sunniland Pipeline Company. Due to his ability to repair anything he was known as the "resident genius".

He could spin a tale, tell a joke and entertain those he loved. "Tromping through the woods" brought Henry great joy as well as his skill as a marksman. One could find him at most every air show in the region as well as flying planes with friends. In true form, he returned days before his death from the 40th annual Buffalo Buzzard float trip with his friends at his favorite place on earth, the Buffalo River in the Arkansas Ozarks.

Survivors include his wife, Lao Thy Ha Kirby of Barling, AR; his step-children, Ha Vuong of Fort Smith and My Vuong of Oklahoma City, OK; two daughters, Lee Anne Kirby of Fayetteville, AR and Kimberly Kirby Buchholz and her husband Edward of St. Louis, MO; the mother of his children, Helen Cook Hander of Fort Smith; granddaughter, Adele G. Moore of St. Louis, MO; one sister, Helen Vance Kirby Daniel and her husband Peyton of Augusta, AR. He also leaves behind an aunt and uncle, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends who he treasured.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Henry Vance and Elva C. Hudson Kirby a sister, Carol Anne Kirby Fordyce and his grandparents, Clarence N. & Minnie Claire Slagle Hudson and Lee B. & Virgie May Vance Kirby who lived in Harrison, Arkansas.

Services were Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Ocker-Putman Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Steve Merrin officiating. Burial was at Roselawn Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Ocker-Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith, Arkansas.
