Emma (Kirby) Burrup was born in Yorkshire, England.

Emma was born in about 1837. She was the second daughter of John Kirby and Mary Fleetham.

She was Christened on 16 April 1837 at North Dalton, Yorkshire, England[1]. Her father was a Joiner of North Dalton.

UK Census Date 1841: Emma (aged about 3) was living with her parents John (aged about 27) and mother Mary (aged about 26), and her older sister Ann (6) in Back Lane, South, Bridlington, Yorkshire, Yorkshire East Riding, England. Also in the household were her grandparents John Fleetham (45) and Hannah Fleetham (40).

When Emma was about 13 years of age she emigrated from Yorkshire, England to Natal Colony (later South Africa) with her family on the ship Haidee.

The Haidee weighed anchor on 10 July 1850 (after being detained for two months) with the Mayor of Hull witnessing their departure. Unfortunately the first leg of the voyage was one hour and forty minutes, as far as Grimsby Roads, as two suspected smallpox cases were on board. The ship was detained for four days until allowed to sail. It took four months of sailing to reach the Natal Port on 7 October 1850, during which time her youngest sister Haidee was born.

Emma (at the age of about 16) was the first of her siblings to marry, to Gavin Pettigrew on 21 September 1853 at Long Market Street, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, after Licence. Gavin's occupation was recorded as Mason[2]. They were both resident at Weenen. William Slatter and James Lindsay were the witnesses.

They had two children; John and Margaret (both of whom pre-deceased her).

Her husband Gavin either passed away or they divorced as Emma married, secondly, Joseph Burrup.
