Biography

He was born before 1710 and his parents were Hannah and Henry Kerby.

Richard Kerby or Kirby had married an Elizabeth (of unknown maiden surname).

On 08 Sep 1730 he received a land patent in Goochland County, Virginia for 400 acres on the north side of James River, on branches of Lickinghole Creek, adjacent to the lands of Henry Atkinson, Philip Hoggatt and Joseph Scott. [1]

Later, his wife, Elizabeth Kearby, relinquished her dower rights in this property when it was divided up ...
- 1742/Feb/16 deed for 100 acres sold to William Parrish. [2]
- 1742/Feb/16 deed for 300 acres of this tract to Francis Kearby of Hanover County, Virginia. [3]

He had a land grant recorded on 25 Jul 1741 in Goochland County, Virginia for 400 acres on south side of Riviana River, both sides of Cunningham Creek, bounded by Racoon Creek, adjoining land of Michael Holland. Richard later gave this land as a gift to his daughter, Betty Goolsby or Goldby. Cunningham Creek is in present day Fluvanna County, Virginia (latitiude 37 51' 05"N, longitude 078 15' 55"W; topographic map: Palmyra).

On 14 Feb 1743 Richard Kearrby paid 40 pounds to Abraham Whitworth, for 300 acres on the north side of James River, bordering south side of Rockfish River in St.James Parish, Goochland County, Virginia. [4]

On 20 Aug 1744 he made a deed of gift of 100 acres (from the former Whitworth tract) in Goochland County, Virginia to James Goldbey or Goolsby and his wife "Betty" (undoubtedly his daughter Elizabeth Kirby). [5]

By 1749 he resided in Lunenburg County, Virginia [6] (now Halifax County, Virginia area).

In 1754 part of Lunenburg County went into the creation of Bedford County, Virginia.

On 16 Dec 1758 the South River Monthly Meeting in Bedford County, Virginia reported that Richard Kerby & his wife Elizabeth, received by request and referred to the care of Halifax Monthly Meeting. [7]

He was last mentioned in the Quaker records of South River Monthly Meeting on 21 Apr 1759 in Halifax County, Virginia.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Richard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Richard:

There is a Richard Kirby, Quaker, in Southampton County, Virginia and he died 1761, his will was probated on 9 Jun 1761 Southampton, Virginia. (see Virginia, U.S., Wills and Probate Records, 1652-1900, ancestry.com, p201-202) He mentions his children; William, John, Richard, Ann and Mercy. Some researchers list his wives as Judith Moody and later Elizabeth Baker.

And, there is a Richard Kirby of Hanover County, Virginia who died sometime after 27 May 1771, he's mentioned in a land deed, 249 acs off Cunningham Creek he sold. (Albemarle County Deed Book 5, 1771, pg 309) Richard obtained the land in 1741. There is no evidence Hanover Richard was Quaker. If you look into "The Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, Virginia 1706-1786" a Protestant church there are numerous records for a Henry, Henry Jr, John and William. This line may be related to the Southampton Richard but, I believe they are two different men.

This has made me rethink my entire Kirby line from William Kirby and Alley Seay back. I'm think records for the Hanover/Goochland County Richard Kirby are mixed with the Southampton/Halifax County Richard Kirby as I don't believe these two men are the same person. The article from Alberta Dennstedt, The Virginia Genealogist Vol 23 (1979) that most of us rely on seems to mix these Richard Kirbys and their children into one line and while the names are the same, the locations are off, putting one set in central Virginia and the other in southern Virginia.

I would love to discuss with interested folk. (Nina Reauveau)

Kirby-377 and Kerby-23 appear to represent the same person because: dups with same parents and same wife and same daughter

Steve Turley, are you still interested in this line enough to collaborate on improving it?

Kirby-377 is a duplicate. I have put effort into adding sources and making it look nice. Before we merge these, however, we need to resolve the choice of surname spelling to use as Kerby-23 is also a duplicate imported by same PM at same time as this one. We should not duplicate lines just to have both spellings. I use Kerby for the Charles Parish family identified in the parish register and Kirby for Pittsylvania and descendants, with overlap to sort out in Goochland.

Regarding a potential merge:

Kirby-527 might be meant to be the same person but he has some wrong children connected to him, and there needs to be a solid connection found to Southampton Co first because this Richard (377) is first known in Goochland Co. So far, all prior origins for him are speculative.

Kirby-527 and Kirby-377 are not ready to be merged because: kirby-527 needs to be opened by profile managers and approved if you want this merge to continue.
