Biography

This profile is part of the Kirkland Name Study.

Snowden S. Kirkland was born in 1835 in Alabama to Willis and Rebecca Kirkland. He grew up in Alabama and married his first cousin Ruthie around 1857. Snowden worked as a farmer.

Snowden S. Kirkland served as a private in Company B (Thomas R. Lightfoot's Company), 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment, under Field Officer Colonel James N. Lightfoot, during the Civil War. He enlisted August 19, 1861. He was wounded in the right thigh at the Battle of Gettysburg July 1, 1863. He was captured as a prisoner of war July 4, 1863. He was paroled at U.S.A. General Hospital, Baltimore, Md. on September 25, 1863. He returned to duty and was listed as permanently disabled on May 17, 1864. He served as a hospital ward for the remainder of the war.

Children include: Salina, Charles J, Archibald P, Olive, Dora Ann, Andrew B, Lucy B, Peyton W, Nellie R.

After the war, Snowden returned to Alabama, to his wife and children, and to his farm. Snowden and Ruthie raised a family of 10 children. Snowden died in 1915 and was buried in the Brackin/Kirkland Cemetery in Henry County, Alabama [8].
