Willis was born in South Carolina. The family moved from Edgefield County, S.C. to Pulaski County, Georgia by 1809. By 1827 they had moved from Georgia to Henry County, Alabama.
Willis married Rebecca Kirkland March 11, 1827 in Henry County, Alabama.[1] They settled in Dale County and had two sons.

The will of Moses Kirkland, of Henry County, Alabama, was dated March 7, 1847 and listed the following children: daughter Ailcey, wife of Matthew Brackin; daughter Ruth Kirkland, wife of William S. Kirkland; son Benjamin Kirkland; son Willis Kirkland; son Josiah Kirkland. The executors of the will were son Benjamin and son-in-law Matthew Brackin.
