His parents are unknown. He has not been located on the 1860 census (looked in Camden County, Missouri, where his future wife was living with her parents, and adjoining counties for any Kirklands and didn't locate any). On the 1900 census, he reports that his father was born in Virginia and his mother in Missouri. When he enlisted in the Civil War, he enlisted at Lebanon, Missouri.

Research Notes
The profile and online trees are showing him with a middle name of Washington, but no records have been located with anything other than the middle initial 'W'. His son was named George William Kirkland, so likely William was also Sr.'s middle name.
