Mistaken Identities and Disputed Origins

This man (married in 1584 to Elizabeth Reade) has been confused with other men named William Knapp or William Knop. He should not be confused with the William Knopp, 1580-1658, son of Thomas Knopp and Alice Howlat, who married Judith Tue and Priscilla Akers.

The origins of this William Knopp are not known, but various publications have identified him as the son of a John Knapp and Martha Blois or the son of Robert Knapp and Margaret Poley[1]There is no evidence for either of these sets of parents.

Also note: There is no relationship between this family and the family of Nicholas Knapp, immigrant to Watertown and Stamford.[2]

Biography

William Knopp married Elizabeth Reade on 27 September 1584.[3][4]

Research notes

I removed a link to the Folsom Family Association which was supposed to reference parents. The page is no longer online, and the copy in the internet archive doesn't seem to have this info: https://web.archive.org/web/20161015041939/http://www.folsomfamily.org/index_files/genindex.html Cole-12288 17:08, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

Was he buried Bures St Mary, Suffolk, England 21 Apr 1627?

The article by Stott, NEHGR 147:327 suggests that it is "probably" this William's son who died then, but suggests it could have been either.

Knapp-1940 and Knopp-24 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles formerly had the same parents (but there is no credible evidence for those parents).

Knopp-24 and Knapp-1609 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife. Other details are compatible. Knopp is the predominant spelling.

No evidence that Martha Blois was his mother. See https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/326585/knapp-knopp-puritan-great-migration-these-profiles-sorted

I am removing the mother.

Not the son of John Knapp and Martha Blois. I removed them as his parents.

Parents identified in data section do not agree with the parents identified in biography. The cited sources are either inaccessible or about other people.

Knopp-24 and Knapp-1609 are not ready to be merged because: Internal discrepancies regarding parents for Knopp-24.

Knapp-1609 and Knopp-24 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, same wife, same child. Geography is consistent. The dates don't match, but that discrepancy can be recorded in the text.

I have edited Knopp-24 so the sources will appear. I see that the parents displayed Knopp-24 do not match the text of the biography. Therefore I will change the proposed merge to an unmerged match.
