Given that his father is usually-recognized as having been born in 1490 and his mother, Elizabeth Anne Smythes, born around 1500 (1497-1503), a date of "about 1517" seems the best fit.[1]
George Knight, a "yeoman" (small independent landowner), inherited the manor "Smythes of Lingfield" from his mother's family. He married a local woman, Alice Brown, daughter of Richard Brown, there in 1538 (if born in 1517, he would have been 21 years old). The couple had the following 4 sons:
George Knight died in Lingfield, Surrey, England, in 1596. If born in 1517, he would have been 79 years old; a goodly age for that time and place.
