Biography

Joanna Knight was born in 1634 in Ash, Somerset, England. Her parents were | Giles Knight Sr., b: 1614 in Gloucestershire, and his 1st wife Elizabeth (Payne) Knight, b: ca. 1618 in Wheatenhurst, Gloucestershire. They married in 1633 and Joanna (aka Johanna) was their first child. ^[1]

In 1654, in Ilchester, Somerset, England Joanna Knight married Rev. Thomas Budd III, b: 1617 in Banstead, Surrey, England. ^[2] They had 4 sons:

1. Thomas Budd, b: 19 May 1655 in Ilchester, Somerset, England
2. James Budd, b: 1657 in Somerset, England
3. John Budd, b: 1658 in Somerset, England
4. William Budd, b: 13 May 1659 in Martock, Somerset, England

Joanna and her husband left the Church of England in the late 1650s, joining the Society of Friends (Quakers). Rev. Thomas Budd's refusal to take the "Oath of Allegiance" (Quakers refused to take Oaths) in 1651 led to his imprisonment; he remained in the Ilchester Gaol until 1670 when he was released only to die at his home in the neighboring village of Martock, Somerset, England. He and his wife apparently died close together on or about June 22, 1670, in Martock, Somerset, England.^[3]
