Captain Peter Knight[1] was christened on 2 July 1620, at St Bride's Church Fleet Street, in London, England.[2] He is the son of Peter Knight and Cicely (Unknown) Knight.

Maryland's Plundering Time

Note: Need to compile available sources regarding Peter Knight specifically concerning The Plundering Time and determine method of presentation, without excessive quotation of Riordan. There are extensive Maryland court records.

"Maryland's Plundering Time was one of the most violent and unsettled periods in its history. In 1645 the colony of Maryland was invaded by a band of privateers (including Captain Peter Knight and William Claiborne) under the leadership of Richard Ingle who, with the aid of many Protestant settlers, overthrew the proprietary government of Lord Baltimore."[3]

"Captain Peter Knight was left in charge of Kent Island from late March 1646. William Claiborne arrived on Kent Island sometime after Christmas. He assumed command of the Kent Fort garrison from Peter Knight …"[4]

In February 1647, the rebels on Kent Island led by Captain Peter Knight sent a letter to the governor of Maryland seeking peace.[5]

In late March 1647, "Believing he could not hold off the invasion, Peter Knight, captain of the rebels, began making preparations to abandon the island. He had his men kill and butcher a number of cattle, and he looted Brent's house of anything that was left, including the locks on the doors. Finally, they took all of the iron work from the mill at Kent. With this plunder loaded aboard ship, Knight and his company hastily set sail for Virginia."[6]

Vital Statistics

Birth & Name

  • On 20 Aug 1655, Capt. Peter Knight gave a deposition in a court case[20][21] stating he was 35 years old, confirming he was born in about 1620. Two English birth records have been found that match that year, but one can be eliminated because the child apparently died. The remaining record is the baptism of Peter Knight, son of Peter and Sisseley Knight, at St Bride's Church in London on 2 Jul 1620.[2]
  • A birth date of 24 Jun 1620 was listed, but not sourced. Changed date to before his christening date.
  • A middle name of William was listed, but not sourced. None of the numerous records cited give any middle name. Middle name deleted.

  • Are there sources for the marriage date of 1645, location Jamestowne, James City County, Colony of Virginia, and marriage end date (her death?) of 1666?
  • 1652 • Northumberland County, Colony of Virginia, Knight, Peter. m. bef. 20 Apr 1663 Anne Hawley. Children: Leonard, Elizabeth, Mary, and James. (NCD&W 1662-1666: 12; NCD&W 1711–1712:95-6).

Anyway, as to Peter's mother, Sisseley/Cicely, I am pretty sure she is the Sysley Moore, daughter of Thomas Moore, whose baptism is listed in the St. Bride's register which I extracted from the archive images served by ancestry.com:

1599 – Aug 26 – UK London St Bride – Birth/Bap – Cicely Moore (Sysley) – d/o Thomas Moore. (London Met Arch)

I read the entire register closely and extracted quite a few other Knights from there that I think are related, and this was the ONLY Cicely that I found. She was baptized, and then appeared several times as mother to the children of one Peter Knight, Haberdasher, including Peter Knight who was born in 1620, and most likely the same as Capt. Peter Knight of Northumberland.

A year after the death of Capt. Peter Knight's father, recorded in the St Bride registry:

1629 – Apr 3 – London St Bride – Bur – Peter Knight – haberdasher, housekeeper (property owner)

...we find the following:

1630 – Apr 15 – Hampshire Romsey – Mar – Cicely Knight & Thomas Collins

It appears highly likely that the widowed mother of this Peter Knight remarried soon after (which was customary, more often than not) and Peter was raised by a Thomas Collins. This might be the reason for the closeness of the Moore and Collins families to the early Knights of the Capt. Peter lines.

As to her antecedents, consider the fact that Sir Thomas Moore was closely associated with the parish of St Bride. Sir Thomas More's son, John More (1509-1547) married an Anne Cresacre (1510-1577) and apparently had at least two sons, Edward and Thomas (1538-1605). This Thomas married Mary Scrope (1528-1607) and they had at least two sons and a daughter, John More (1557-1610), Thomas More (1568-1616), and Cicely (no dates found). This latter Thomas More appears to very likely be the father of Cicely who would be named for her aunt. This is the only Cicely I noted in the register, but there could be others found with a more concentrated search. I did note quite a few Moores (as the scribes were spelling it at that time and place) and Cicely apparently had brothers who were having children baptized there. Moore family researchers might want to look into this; my interest was mainly Knights and it appears that this Cicely Moore married Peter Knight and was mother of Peter Knight b. 1620 and baptized at St Bride.
