Biography

Eleanor _____ (Unknown surname) married Walter Norton by about 1618, so evidently she migrated with him when he came in 1630, first residing in Charlestown. They moved to York in 1632 where he was one of the patentees of Agamenticus [York]. Walter was murdered by Pequots the summer of 1633.[1]

She may have had a daughter Jane who was born about 1618, who on March 13, 1638 married Henry Simpson and by 1649 had married Nicholas Bond. Anderson in "Great Migration Begins" says "...gap of about twenty years (between Jane and her other children by William Hooke) ... may be an indication that daughter Jane was actually a child of the first wife, or that there was a third wife between Jane (Reeve) Reynolds and Eleanor _____."[1]

She married (2nd) about 1638 to William Hooke.[1]

William and Eleanor Hooke had the following children:

  1. Humphrey Hooke was born about 1636 and died young.[2]
  2. William Hooke was born about 1638. He married at St. Stephen's, Bristol England on December 27, 1660 to Elizabeth Dyer.[2]
  3. Jacob Hooke was born at Salisbury on September 15, 1640 and was still living on June 25, 1658 when he was named in his grandfather's will.[2]
  4. Josias Hooke was born about 1642 and was living June 25, 1658 when he was named in his grandfather's will.[2]

Eleanor's husband, William Hooke, returned to England, died and was buried at St. Stephens, Bristol on July 8, 1652.[2] Eleanor died sometime after 8 April 1662 when she sold land to Anthon Stanain.[3]

Knight? NO

The surname Knight is considered to be unlikely.

Research Note

I have not found the death place and date of Eleanor (Norton) Hooke mentioned in the works of Robert Charles Anderson, although we get a clue that she remained in New England since she was appointed administratrix of the estate and ordered to bring an inventory to the next Salisbury court.[2][1]

Profile previously stated without source Elenor's birth place was Bristol, Gloucestershire, England and that she died 1666 in Boston, Massachusetts.

I'm adding the Puritan Great Migration Project Box to this profile, since she evidently migrated with her 1st husband in 1630.

The date of birth must be off on this profile, since she was married in 1618 (According to R.C. Anderson). Linda, I think her dob could be estimated at 1598 (20 years prior to marriage). If you agree, please update. Thanks.

There was no response (and PGM is currently the only manager), so I updated the birth estimate base on your suggestion.

Thanks M.

I added Humphrey as son.

I'm going ahead and detaching Thomas, since (if that actually was his name) he was the son of Walter Norton and his first wife. see here: https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/great-migration-begins-immigrants-to-ne-1620-1633-vols-i-iii/image?volumeId=12107&pageName=1341&rId=23895700 Anne B. posted this on Thomas' profile in 2018 and no action was taken by PM. so I think it's safe to do the detachment now.

Hi Linda,

Robert Charles Anderson has a sketch for Eleanor's husband, William Hooke, in his work, "The Great Migration." He explains that Frederick Todd's belief that Eleanor's surname "Knight" was based on a wrong analysis of a warantee clause which should be read "father Humphrey Hooke, brother Thomas Hooke, Robert Knight and others." So Robert Knight was not a brother.

Conclusion: The surname of Eleanor (Norton) Hooke is unknown, and Unknown should be her surname here on this profile.

Will you please make this adjustment to her surname? Thank you.

Looks like Eleanor’s LNAB should be updated to Unknown?
