Research Notes

Alternate father given as David Knight (bef.1735-aft.1775).

Removing uncertain parents John Carter Knight (1735-abt.1783) and Ann (Burgess) Knight (1735-1805) since Absolam's affidavit says his father died before he enlisted in August of 1781 and John Carter Knight's will does not mention him.

This Absalom is nearly always referred to as a brother to my ancestor, Thomas Knight b ca 1740-d 1824 Wilson co., TN. I am certain these two are related, and they may be brothers, but the 21 year age difference suggests more likely uncle/nephew or cousins. My ancestor, Thomas Knight, mentioned his son named Absalom (b ca 1791) in his will, so Thomas and Absalom are not father/son. —Don Knight 1 Jul 2021 via email.

I see some confusion re: some Absalom Knights.

1. Absalom Knight Sr. b 7/27/1761 Orange co., NC-d ca 1839 Benton co., TN. This Absalom is nearly always referred to as a brother to my ancestor, Thomas Knight b ca 1740-d 1824 Wilson co., TN. I am certain these two are related, and they may be brothers, but the 21 year age difference suggests more likely uncle/nephew or cousins. My ancestor Thomas Knight mentioned his son Absalom (b ca 1791) in his will, so Thomas1740 and Absalom 1761 are not father/son. Thomas and Absalom each had sons named Absalom and Thomas. Absalom Knight Sr. attended Absalom Knight Jr.’s probate sale in 1837 Benton co., TN. I see many researchers show a Susan Ready Knox as wife of Absalom 1761, but there is no proof. Absalom Knight b 1761 was not the one that married Penella (Penelope) Dodd, nor Elizabeth Martin. 2. The following is the son of Absalom Knight b 1761. Absalom Knight Jr. b ca 1792 Orange co., NC-d ca 1837 Benton co. He married Penella Dodd per actual marriage certificate. She is referred to as Permelia, Penny, Penelope etc. It appears his 1st marriage was 4/28/1816 Wilson co., TN to Elizabeth Martin. They had two children Marion ca 1817 and Mansel Green 1/15/1821 both born Wilson co.,TN. 2nd marriage was 12/10/1825 Penella (Penelope / Permelia / Penny) Dodd. They had 6-8 children. 3. Absalom Knight b ca 1783 Guilford co., NC-d prob Greene co., MO > 1840. This Absalom is the son of Thomas Knight 1740. Ancestry’s census search shows for Greene co., MO 1840 census an Abraham in the “index.” A quick look at the original image clearly shows Absalom Knight. He is living next to 3 Perryman families that are his aunt and cousins. 4. Absalom Knight b ca 1812 Wilson Co., TN-d.ca 1846, Lafayette Co., MS-shows in a few trees as marrying Penelope Dodd. He is a son of Thomas P. Knight 1790-1852 and Rebecca Jones. I don’t know if he married, but if he did, it was not Penelope Dodd.

Some related Dodd data.

Eli William Knight b ca. 1814 Wilson Co., TN-d ca. 1858 Lafayette Co., MS + 2/18/1843 Marshall Co., MS record shows Essran [referred to as Espara or Esperanna Dodd b 1/27/1827 TN-d 3/7/1913 Marshall Co., MS [Eli is a son of Thomas P. Knight b ca 1790 Caswell co., NC-d 12/24/1852 Jackson co., AR and Rebecca Jones b ca 1791 Wilson co., TN-d < 1842]

Permelia Milly4 Knight b 3/13/1823 Wilson Co., TN-d 7/24/ 1877 Lafayette Co., MS + 8/22/1837 Benton co. TN William Franklin Hollowell b 1/21/1820 Chatham co., NC.-d 8/19/1914 Lafayette Co., MS. [Permelia Knight is believed to be sister to Eli above, however, I would like to see more proof. Bryce Knight and Susan Knight Gore are more familiar with this family.]
