Alfred was the eldest son of Alfred Knowles and Mary Peterson.[1] His parents had always lived in rented houses until he, Alfred (Jr), purchased a block of land and built a house at 17 Rose Street, Brunswick. It was Alfred (Jr)'s intention to marry his sweetheart and live in the house after he returned home from service in WW1. Sadly, Alfred was killed in action. Alfred (Sr), Mary and family lived in the house. Mary made the house payments and eventually sold it to her second son, Claude, who lived there for a number of years with his wife Fan and daughter Margaret, before moving to Dromana, (Victoria). The house has since been demolished.[2]
Alfred enlisted in the AIF in 1914 as a "driver" in the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, Battery 5, embarking from Melbourne on the Transport A9 "Shropshire" on October 20, 1914.[3] He was killed in action on November 03, 1916 and is buried at Bulls Road Cemetery, (Plot II, Row L, Grave No.1), Flers, France.[4][5] Alfred's entry on the Roll of Honour is listed on the Australian War Memorial site.[6]For eyewitness accounts of Alfred's death, see the Australian Red Cross Society "Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau" files at the Australian War Memorial.
