Arthur was born in 1864. He is the son of Thomas Knowles and Jane Flanagan.
In 1874, when Arthur was about 10 years of age, a hearing in the Williamstown Police Court, (regarding absence from school), summoned John Pennell (as the Guardian of Arthur Knowles), who stated that, " The child had no mother and the father, being in reduced circumstances, he (defendant) had taken the boy home 3 or 4 years ago and had kept him since ..." A fine of 1 shilling, with 2s 6d costs was imposed.[1]
Later in life, following his marriage to Elizabeth Dudley, Arthur lived at 57 Ferguson Street, Williamstown and, for many years, operated the "Rosedale Dairy"[2], until such time as he became insolvent (1910).[3]
Following the death of his wife, Elizabeth, (1907) and sale of the Dairy, (1908), Arthur moved to 78 Electra Street, (the home of John Pennell), where he lived until he passed away in 1915. Arthur is buried in the Williamstown Cemetery. [4]
