Joseph Ashfield Knowles enlisted in Company B, Georgia 3rd Infantry Regiment on 26 Apr 1861 as a soldier in the War Between the States.
In January 1865, he was in the General Hospital in Camp Winder with a gunshot wound in left shoulder; eventually his arm was amputated. He was mustered out on 09 Apr 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA.
He married Frances Rogers in January 1866, and they had five children. They primarily lived in Putnam County, Georgia.
In Summer 1897, there was a large Knowles Family Reunion in Indiana. Joseph A. Knowles attended this reunion and was recorded as a visitor there.
In the 1900 Census, his wife is listed as a widow, so Joseph Ashfield died sometime between 1897 and 1900.
