Sarah was born in 1826 being christened on the 26th June of that year[1] at St John's Church, Bedwardine, Worcester. Her parents were Thomas Knowles and Martha. A Martha Knowles is buried the following month at the same church, so her mother may have died after childbirth [2].
The place of birth of Sarah is known from the 1871 census[3], and her maiden name and father's name are known from her wedding certificate[4] and from her son John Hayward's birth certificate[5].
Marriage
Sarah married George Slater, a basket maker from Yorkshire, in 1849 [6] at Kidderminster district. However George died in 1855[7], leaving Sarah with one daughter, Sarah Jane[8].
Sarah married James Hayward (aka Haywood) in 1856 at Shrawley Parish Church[4]. From the marriage certificate there were two witnesses, William Hayward and Elizabeth Knowles; thought to be James' brother and Sarah's sister-in-law respectively. Shrawley is a few miles from Grimley. Sarah's surname on the marriage certificate is given as Knowles and she is listed as a spinster. However her surnames on the birth certificate of John, her first child with James, makes it clear she had been married before: "Haywood previously Slater, formerly Knowles"[9].
Residence
Sarah must have been living in Worcester when born [1]. In 1841 her location is uncertain. She is not with her her father Thomas who had remarried to Maria[10][11]. There is a high degree of confidence this Thomas Knowles is her father as he is living in Great Witley near Shrawley and the 1851 census gives his occupation as road surveyor, the same as on Sarah's marriage certificate[4]. There is a possibility that Sarah may have been living in St Pancras, London, as there is a person of that name, and appropriate age, in the home of a Joseph Upsall [12]. The premises is listed as an institution. All that is know of her is that she was born outside the area, and not in London in later censuses, so this remains a conjecture at best.
In 1851 Sarah is living with her first husband George in Ribbesford near Bewdley, Worcestershire[13]. Their daughter Sarah Jane is not yet born.
By the time of her second marriage to James Hayward she was living in Shrawley[4]. From the birth of their children they appeared to have moved to Little Witley, very near Shrawley and may have moved to Astley and Areley Kings near Stourport, and then Lindridge (see references for children)[3]. Finally they settled in Rock Parish near Pensax where they lived the rest of the lives[14][15].
Family
George and Sarah had one daughter, Sarah Jane[8]. She went on to be a kitchen maid by 1871[16].
James and Sarah had four children. John was born in Little Witley, Worcestershire, 1858[17][9]. Harry was born in Astley, Worcestershire, 1862. William was born in Areley Kings, Worcestershire, 1864. Finally Ruth was born in Lindridge, Worcestershire, 1866[3]. John and Harry would go on to be carpenters.
Death
Sarah died in 1898. She is buried in Pensax churchyard, along with her husband James.
Anomalies
The 1861 census has been transcribed wrongly by Familysearch.org who have Thomas Haywood[18], and SearchAncestry.co.uk who have James Hagwood. Both are online transcription errors as the original written census return says, James Haywood.
The christening for their son John in Little Witley parish church has the parents listed as Thomas and Sarah[9]. This is not an online transcription error as it appears in the written parish records. There is no other Hayward of any spelling christened in that parish at or around the birth date so it has been assumed to be a mistake in the register. The preceding entry has a father Thomas. The marriage certificate for the son John Hayward has his father as James. John's actual birth certificate has the parents as James and Sarah.
