Biography

James Knowles is the son of Ephraim Knowles and Cynthia Kimball. [1].

James was born on 28 Sep 1831 in Gibson County, Indiana [2] .

Enlisted in Company K, Illinois 64th Infantry Regiment on 09 Mar 1864.Promoted to Full Corporal.Mustered out on 11 Jul 1865 at Louisville, KY. James served as the model for the Civil War statue in front of the Gibson County courthouse. He and his buddies used to winter in Florida in a place once informally known as Yankeetown. In 1911, the area was officially established as one of three Union Veterans Colonies and took the name Lynn Haven after W.H. Lynn, one of the chief developers. In January 1913, James died there on one of his Florida visits. His body was shipped by train back to Gibson County, Indiana and ultimately laid to rest in the Odd Fellows Cemetery just across the river in Illinois.

James married several times but only had children with his first wife. James married Mary Price McClane on 30 JAN 1856 in Wabash County, Illinois. Together, they had four children [3]. After Mary passed away in 1898, James went on to marry Ellen Hannah Braxton (Find A Grave: Memorial #44184011). According to the 1900 census, they were married in 1899 although no record has yet been found [4]. James went on to marry Fannie McAllister (Find A Grave: Memorial #188762390) on 23 Dec 1906 in Marion, Indiana [5].

James passed away on 17 Jan 1913 while on vacation in Lynn Haven, Bay County, Florida. He was interred at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Section D,, Lot 231, Plot F, Mt Carmel, IL which is attached to Rose Hill Cemetery. [2]
