Biography

Birth

Around 1647 (Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts).[1]

Occupation

According to Stocking, he was a Shoemaker, and certainly may have followed that trade in his youth. But in his will he is called a husbandman and that was his livelihood for most of his life.

Marriage

Samuell married Elizabeth Witt in April 1669 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts, United States.[2]

Property

Samuel's farmstead was in the Southeast corner of what is now Hamilton, near the Wenham boundary. His property was in the area of Essex St., Chebacco Road, and Woodbury St.

  • 1 Jul 1671 (Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts Bay Colony) For 32 pounds, Samuel purchased 20 acres from John Patch. [3]
  • 30 Jul 1679 (Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts Bay Colony) Samuel purchased 40 acres from John Sampson. [4]
  • 20 Nov 1679 (Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts Bay Colony) Samuel sold to George Hull the 20 acres he had bought off Patch. [5]
  • 1692 (Ipswich, Essex Co.) Samuel was apparently lame, and for that reason received additional financial consideration in his uncle, Deacon Thomas' Will.

Death and Probate

Samuel died in 1697 in The Hamlet, Ipswich, Essex County.

His will provided for his wife, Elizabeth, and left the farmstead to his oldest son, Samuel. His children Jonathan, Ebenezer, Sarah, and Elizabeth are mentioned. John Witt, his wife's brother, is a witness to the will. [6]
