Ruhamah Burnham Knowlton was born on September 6, 1817, in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Harriett and Sidney. She married Erastus Hitchcock Derby on August 10, 1834. They had one child during their marriage. She died on December 29, 1896, in Fargo, North Dakota, having lived a long life of 79 years, and was buried in Le Sueur, Minnesota.
