Biography

Birth

Thomas was born in 1728 in East Haddam Twp., Middlesex Co., Connecticut Colony, the son of Thomas Knowlton and Susannah Cone.[1]

Thomas married Abigail Ackley on August 25, 1754 in East Haddam, Connecticut Colony. (Early Connecticut Marriages, Book 1, gives the marriage date as August 30, 1753)

Thomas and Abigail had the following children: Rev. Gideon Ackley Knowlton born 1758, Abigail born 1761, Mary Lee born 1766 and Urial born 1768. Note that the Stocking History of the Knowltons shows Thomas and Abigail with a son Thomas born 1760 who married Susanna Hollis. That is an error. They had no son Thomas. The Thomas who married Susanna Hollis is the son of Joshua Knowlton and Zerviah Bryant.

Thomas passed away sometime after 1790 in East Haddam, Connecticut as he appears in the 1790 U.S. Census for this location. Please note that he is not the Thomas Knowlton who passed away in 1832 or 1837 and was buried in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Several individuals have created Find A Grave Memorials with that erroneous information. They have confused this Thomas with another Thomas Knowlton born in 1760 in Ipswich, Massachusetts.

  • The other Thomas Knowlton with which this Thomas is confused is Thomas Knowlton born 1760 in Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay, the son of Thomas Knowlton and Sarah Stacey. Thomas born 1760 married Abigail Goodhue and was a Deacon of the church. He passed away February 13, 1832 in Ipswich, MA. and is buried in Highlands Cemetery. His gravestone says he was 71 years old. It's puzzling and troubling that individuals would create Find A Grave Memorials showing a picture of this gravestone and calling it the grave of this Thomas born in 1728. This Thomas would have been 104 years old in 1832 had he lived that long! And since he lived his entire life in East Haddam, CT. why would he be buried in Ipswich, MA.? There originally were three erroneous Find A Grave Memorials. #6843233 has been corrected. However #136390282 should actually be removed and #21681815 needs correction because it links to a John Myers who passed away in 1937.

Knowlton-2262 and Knowlton-722 appear to represent the same person because: The Thomas Knowlton who married Abigail Ackley was the son of Thomas Knowlton and Susannah Cone born Sep. 28, 1728 in East Haddam, CT. Therefore Knowlton-722 has correct birth date, place and parents. Knowlton- 2262 has correct wife. The Thomas Knowlton who married Abigail Ackley was not deceased in 1832 and buried in Ipswich, MA. That is another Thomas Knowlton born 1760. See my explanation on Knowlton-722's profile page about the Find A Grave errors that have confused two unrelated Thomas Knowltons. Therefore 722 and 2262 should be merged keeping the biographical page for 722, Abigail Ackley as the wife and Gideon as the son.
