During the colonial period after 1763, control of the area called the New Hampshire Grants, in what would ultimately become the state of Vermont, was disputed between the Provinces of New York and New Hampshire. Settlers with grants issued by New York didn’t acknowledge settlers with grants issued by New Hampshire. In 1777 settlers with New Hampshire Grants formed a sovereign state called the Vermont Republic which lasted until Vermont was finally admitted to the Union as the state of Vermont on March 4, 1791.

I am descended from Elijah Knowlton via his second wife, Mary Hamlin and their daughter Lucinda Knowlton who married Elnathan Maxfield in North Hero around 1822. Their son, Elijah Knowlton Maxfield is my great grandfather who married Mary Emma Goodell Blood. Note: Mary Emma Goodell Blood was adopted by Joseph Freeman Blood and his second wife, Lefe Goodell). Mary Emma Goodell Blood was the daughter of Amos Goodell (distant relative of Lefe Goodell) and Mary Barnes of Thompson, Windham, CT. Mary Barnes died shortly after daughter Mary Emma's birth. Amos Goodell remarried to Joanna Howe of Thompson, CT and kept his 3 older children. Infant Mary Emma Goodell went to Charlton, MA to live with Lefe Goodell and J F Blood. I just joined so I am learning Wikitree, if you want info let me know
I am disconnecting Elijah from Daniel (Knowlton-784) and Abigail (Marshall-7586). While there were a number of Knowltons in Vermont in the 1700s, there is nothing to connect an Elijah b. 1766 to Daniel Knowlton and Abigail Marshall, who lived their whole lives in Massachusetts. I reviewed all of the sources on this page and the only thing connecting them is somebody's personal tree on Ancestry that does not source the link. The descendants of Elijah and Polly look good but neither Stocking, the Errata, nor any vital records suggest that these two have anything to do with each other.
