Philip was born April 9, 1769 in Boscawen, Province of New Hampshire, the son of John Knowlton and Hannah Flanders.
By 1792 he is living in Orford, Grafton County, New Hampshire as the Orford records note his marriage to Betsey Davis on February 1, 1792.
In the only census record in which he appears, Philip is enumerated in the 1800 U.S. Census of Orford, along with wife Betsey (both in the 26-44 age category) and four children under 10 years - two boys and two girls.
While Philip does not appear in any other census records, he does appear in two land records:
On June 9, 1808 Philip, who is described as of Orford, husbandman, buys from Jonathan Stevens, part of Lot 13, Ninth Range, 5-3/4 acres of Orford property. It is clear from the description that this 5+ acre piece adjoins property Philip already owns.
By 1814 Philip is living in Wentworth, N.H. as he is described as "of Wentworth" in a Deed of Mortgage to John Gould dated January 14, 1814 secured by 50 acres (part of the east end of Lot 13) in Warren, N.H. The Release of this obligation is recorded April 15, 1815.
Note: Orford, Wentworth and Warren are adjoining towns in Grafton County, N.H.
