Rosel was born July 15, 1735 in East Haddam, Connecticut Colony, the son of Thomas Knowlton and his wife Susannah Cone. His birth record gives his name as "Robert", a transcription error that is common in this data set.
Rosel was a private in Capt. Henry Champion's 12th company of Connecticut militia, Col. Nathan Whiting's regiment, serving from June through November of 1758. This service included the Expedition for the Reduction of Canada.
Rosel again served from August 18th through December 16, 1759 as a corporal in Capt. David Hubbard's 13th company of Connecticut militia, Gen. Phineas Lyman's Regiment.
Rosel married Ann Dutton on April 15, 1760 in East Haddam, Connecticut Colony. He married second Sophia Goodell about 1787 probably in Belchertown, Massachusetts.
Rosel likely settled in Belchertown about April of 1769. The land records of April 19, 1769 tell us that Rosel, said to be of East Haddam, mortgaged his 105 acre farm for 100 pounds to Thomas Halbert of Pelham. Rosel's land is described as Lot 7 bounded on the north by Lot 8 "belonging to Jered Knowlton" Jared was also a witness to this transaction. This mortgage was released of record on November 6, 1777. The adjoining farms of Rosel and Jared were located in the Dwight section of Belchertown.
Rosel is found in both the 1790 and 1800 U.S. Census of Belchertown, Massachusetts.
Rosel passed away May 15, 1806 in Belchertown. His will dated April 28, 1806 was entered into probate on July 29, 1806. In his will Rosel names his wife Sophia and his children in the following order: Asenath, Alice, Dorothy, Anna, Roswell, Warren, Elisha, Dutton, Nancy and Susannah. His gravestone erroneously states his age at death as 60 and gives his year of death as 1805.
Rosel is erroneously given a dopplegander by Stocking (ID 412 and 224)[1] as a son of the fictitious Silas Knowlton (191) (Rosel 412). Stocking also lists him correctly as the son of Thomas (94) (Rosel 224). See the Knowltons of the 1700s in New England[2] for clarification.
