Biography

Andrew Knox, Bishop Andrew Knox

Abt. 1559 Birth and Parentage

Scottish flag
Andrew Knox DD was born in Scotland.

Andrew b. abt. 1559 Renfrew, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

Some sources indicate a father of John Knox, other indicate a father of Uchtred Knox. This confusion seems to be an error in Genealogical Memoirs of John Knox and of the Family Knox where in one paragraph Uchtred is cited as the father and the next paragraph John is cited as the father. Other sources indicate just Uchtred as the father.[1]

1579 University of Glasgow Graduate

Andrew was educated at the University of Glasgow, where he graduated M.A. in 1579.[2]

1581-1607 Scottish Minister

In 1581, Andrew was minister of the Gospel at Lochwinnoch Church in Renfrewshire, Scotland which belonged to the Abbey of Paisley. The church was dedicated to St. Gwinoch, built 1504 by Lord Sempill and rebuilt in 1806. Andrew translated to the Abbey Church at Paisley in abt. 1584. He was minister at Paisley from 1584 until 1607.[3]

1605-1607 Bishop of the Isles Scotland

On 12 Feb 1605, Andrew became Bishop of the Isles. After visiting his See, he wished to continue to be minister of Paisley and proposed the appointment of a colleague which was rejected by the Presbytery, the magistrates and inhabitants. He didn't quit this charge until 12 Nov 1607. (Metcalfe's History of Paisley, 212; Scottish Review, xx.; Hatfield MSS., vii., 246)[3]

1611-1619 Bishop of Raphoe Ireland

Church of Ireland Clergy

On 26 Jun 1611, Andrew became Bishop of Raphoe in Ireland and remained in that position until 08 Jan 1619.[4]

He rebuilt a former monastery in Rathmullan, County Donegal, as his own private residence in Ulster. [5]

Marriages

  1. Andrew married his cousin Elizabeth Knox daughter of Sir William Knox and Heiress of Sylvieland.[6]
  2. Andrew married Elizabeth Bingley daughter of Sir Ralph Bingley, Knight of Rosguill, County Donegal.[7]

Death

Andrew d. 17 Mar 1633 Rapho, Donegal, Ireland

I have seen Uchtred shown as 'Uchtred John Knox' in a few documents but I don't have access to those. I won't say this *is* his name and it would be foolish of me to say this is *the* Uchtred so-named as there are several Uchtreds. All I aim to do here is put this in as a possibility, nothing more.

Knox-3858 and Knox-1084 appear to represent the same person because: Same person, with same parent and spouse
