Biography

George Knox was born July 17, 1774 in Rowan, North Carolina to parents Hannah Reid and John Knox. ^[1]

George married Esther / Easther Renshaw ^[2] November 30, 1803 in Rowan County, North Carolina.^[3] Together they had six children*; three sons* and three daughters:

1. John - (1799 - 1860)*
2. Rufus Reid - (1809 - 1882)
3. James - (1811 - 1896)
4. Nancy - (1814 - 1893)
5. Mary Brandon - (1816 - 1874)
6. Frances (Fanny) - (1820 - 1900)

He passed away July 24, 1867/9° in Rowan County and was buried at Back Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mount Ulla, Rowan County (Plot: Section J, Row 2). ^[5]

• I speculate there were five known children including 2 sons with John being an unintentional addition due to errors from sites like FamilySearch and Ancestry.com. Those sites list a John born 1799 but his attached sources ^[6] all list a father named Samuel and a birth place of Wilmington, DE. We know this family did not leave NC and his adult census docs list a wife Margaret and no movement south. There are two grandchildren named John belonging to this couple; one adopted by daughter Frances and husband Richard. I am detaching him from FS but the link noted above will still work to the page of sources.

° There is some debate over the death year because of an image of his gravemarker shown on Findagrave ^[7] that was edited (most likely to 'sharpens the image) and published elsewhere. The Findagrave site photo is illegible but the site lists the 1867 year as does the Cemetery card inscription found here: [8] and ^[8]
