Johann Köhler was born about 1804 in Alsace-Lorraine, which then was part of France. From 1871-1918 it was part of Germany, then again reverted to France after the First World War.
Johann Köhler married Catherine Akers about 1830, exact details unknown. The couple and their children migrated to the U.S. before 1850 and after that his name was variously written John Koeler, Koehler, Kohler and Keeler. 19th century spelling was not uniform.
The 1850 U.S. census at Cleveland, Ohio showed "John Keeler" was age 46, with wife Catherine, 40; and children John, 21; Charles, 13; Helen, 11; Margaret, 9, all born in Germany. Daughter Maria or Mary was born at Cleveland in August 1850.
His wife "Catherine Koehler" died in 1878. There is then a death record at Cleveland for "John Koehler", 83, born in Germany, who died of "old age" on 5 January 1887, buried at Woodland Cemetery. It seems to be the same person but remains uncertain. The cemetery inscription shows his name as "Jno. Koehler" and gives no further identifying information. Records were poor!
