Biography

Married Catharine Donnally, 14 Aug. 1845, in Green Township, Gallia County by Rev. A. A. Martin.

1850 Census shows Samuel living with Catharine and children Charles (b. est. 1846) and Laura A (b. est. 1848).

The death record of Addie/Ada/Adaline (Koontz) Hamilton states that she was born 10 Oct 1853 to Samuel Koontz of Ohio and Katherine Donally of West Virginia.

Married Isabella Kirkendall, 4 January 1858, in Gallia County, Ohio. D. B. Williams, Minister. Isabella was born in Ohio 8 Feb 1833 to Daniel Kirkendall and Lida (Lydia?) Price, and died 7 Dec 1915.

1860 Census shows Samuel (as Koonts) living with Isabella (as Issabel) and children Jerome (as Gerome, b. est 1850), Adaline (b. est. 1852), and Benjamin (b. est. 1859).

Laura (b. 1848) and William (b. 1856) (see 1850 & 1870 censuses) do not appear in the 1860 census records for Samuel and Isabella, but there are a Laura and a William of approximately the right ages in the residence of Rufus and Elizabeth Porter in 1860. It is possible that they were living with the Porters temporarily for some reason.

1870 Census shows Samuel living with Isabella and children Jerome (b. est. 1850, presumably to Catharine, since Isabella would have been 13), William (b. est. 1856), Benjamin (b. est. 1860), Warren (b. est. 1862), Leonidas (b. est. 1864), and Lydia (b. est. 1866). A Philip (probably son of Abraham Koontz & Elizabeth Eagle) and Julia Koontz (probably Julia Ellen Foster) live next door to Samuel and Isabella in 1870.

Census records show a birth year of 1822-1823, but headstone in Koontz family cemetery (where wife Isabella Kirkendoll is also buried) has date of death as Jan 31, 1870, and age as 52 y 10m 20d.
