Biography

Keats-Rohan lists William [_] (the empty square brackets are meant to show that there was no second name given in the records) as a tenant of Waldin Ingeniator in Domesday (1086) Lincolnshire. [1]

By 1115/18, the date of the Lindsey Survey, Simon fitzWilliam is son and heir, was holding Waldin's land in chief. [2]

His father might have been Walden the Engineer his overlord. Or his wife or mother might have been a daughter of Walden the Engineer. Also, his descendants seem to be heirs of his contemporary named Anschetil, who had a son named William.

Research Notes

The family was not yet known as Kyme ... this surname seems to have begun in the next generation.

  • William fitz Anschetil and Simon fitz William were also contemporaries. There appears to be no evidence that for example Anschetil might be father to William the father of Simon, nor that the latter was still alive for the Lyndsey survey. According to modern editions of the Lindesey survey, Cawley is incorrect to state on his MEDLANDS project website (version of November 2018) that it calls him "Simon fitz William fitz Anschitel" holding land in Hackthorn. It only says "Simon filius Wilellmi". Presumably this comes from the old and highly criticized edition he uses. Cawley's own footnote shows the hope and doubt involved: "Horace Round is highly critical of Waters’s edition (Round, J. H. (1909) Feudal England (London), The Lindsey Survey (1115-1118), p. 182-3), but there appears no reason to doubt the accuracy of the names of the persons which are recorded. ". [3]

More detail is found in Farrer, who Keats-Rohan cites:[4]

The tenant of the bishop of Lincoln's manors of Langton and Wragby in the Lindsey survey was Simon son of William, who may be identified with some degree of probability as son of William the Domesday undertenant of Waldin the engineer.
Turning to the fee of Colswain the tenants of his manor of Ingham with soc in Fristhorpe were Roger and Anschitel, and of his two manors in Culverthorpe his tenants were Conded and Anschitel. The tenant of Joscelin son of Lambert in Ingham was also named Anschetill. In the Lindsey survey Colswain's fee was in the possession of Robert de Hai, whose tenant of 7 bov. in Fristhorpe was William son of Anschetill. The late Mr. W. O. Massingberd adopted this William son of Anschetill as the progenitor of Kime. [Assoc. Architectural Societies, xxvii (1), 5. 4.] The Kimes gave land in Ingham and Friesthorpe to Bullington priory. [Harl. Chs. 4a.] In the Lindsey survey Simon son of William in succession to Waldin the engineer was the tenant in chief of 1 1/2 car. in Hackthorn, in which place Simon son of William de Kime gave to Bullington priory his mill, and one of his descendants confirmed a mediety of the church to the same house. In the same survey the bishop of Lincoln's tenant in Ingham and Coates was ' Simon.' [Sim. interlined in a different hand.]
It is suggested as the most probable conclusion that 'William' the man of Waldin the engineer was the ancestor of Kime, that Simon son of William of the Lindsey survey was his son, and that Simon had an unrecorded son William, father of Simon son of William the founder of the Gilbertine priory of Bullington.

Cawley makes this one the first of the line

http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ENGLISHNOBILITYMEDIEVAL3D-K.htm#_Toc436926787

but other writers omit two generations and make the first William the grandfather of the first Philip.

I think we need to disconnect the parents, wife and daughter. They are apparently all not real people.

Per Cawley, Birth and death dates are for the wrong William de Kyne. Children are shown being born after his death here. No source material given for places of birth and death. Cawley at FMG says specifically William's wife's name is unknown.
