Biography

Birth

Alice (___) was born in about 1607, likely in England. Her date of birth is based on her recorded age of 28 in 1635. [1]

Immigration

Embarked 13 July 1635 from London to New England on the James.[1]

  • Ralph Farman, barber age 32 (b.c. 1603)
  • Alice Farman, 28 (b.c. 1607)
  • Mary Farman, 7 (b.c. 1628)
  • Thomas Farman, 4 (b.c. 1631)
  • Ralph Farman, 2 (b.c. 1633)

Marriages and children

Alice married Ralph Farnham (1603-1643) in the year 1626, 4 children were born between 1626 and 1635, in England Source: #S214

  1. EphraimFarnham 1627-1630 Ephraim Farnum. "Some have suggested that Ralph and Alice had a son named Ephraim. No supporting record has been found. The earliest Ephraim Farnham in America was the seventh child of Ralph (k1633-1692)[2]
  2. Mary Farnham bpt St. Nicholas, Rochester, Kent 13 July 1628;[2] m. Boston 20 Oct 1650 Daniel Poor rec. in Andover[2]. She died at Andover Feb 1713/14<[2]

  4. Ralph Farnham Ralph Farnham bapt. St. Nicholas, Rochester, Kent, 4 August 1633;[2] died at Andover 8 Jan 1691/2[2] m. Andover 26 Oct 1657 or 1658 Elizabeth Holt[2]
  5. Sarah FarnumSarah FARNHAM b. say 1639 in Massachusetts (Ipswich ?);[2] died at Andover 12 May 1728 in her 90th year;[2] m. (1) Andover 26 April 1658 George Abbott, Jr.[2] m. (2) Andover 1 August 1689 Henry Ingalls.[2]
  6. John Farnham b. probably in Ipswich, Massachusetts say 1641;[2] died Andover 17June 1723 in 83rd year;[2] m. Andover 12 Nov 1667 Rebecca Kent.[2]

Solloman Martin, ship carpenter, and Ales Varnam, wid., of Ipswich, were married 18 JAN 1648, in Gloucester, Massachusetts[3]

After their marriage Solomon and his two young children by Mary Pindar and Alice and her children moved to Andover, Massachusetts

25 March 1662: Solomon Martin, "late of Andover," and "gone out of the country six or seven years," had a house and lands that were going to ruin, Alice, for 12 pounds resigns the house and lands to Nathan Parker for the use of Samuel Martin (son of Solomon), but reserves the right to live in the house and use the proceeds of 1/3 of the orchard, during her life. This says nothing of the circumstances of his going, only that he left and is now presumed to be dead.[4]

Russell Farnham in his "New England Descendants..." book on this family states that in 1662 Alice put young Samuel under the guardianship of Nathaniel Parker, an "original proprietor and learned man". Apparently Samuel was "running at large and enjoying himself without parental restraint".[5] Along with more interesting details about the future of Samuel Martin, Farnham notes that the house and land inherited by Alice and managed by Parker was sold in 1673 leading to speculation that Alice died at that time. He also notes that a land grant was made to Solomon Martin in 1680 and property sold to him in 1684 by Robert Russell, refuting the notion that Solomon was dead or permanently returned to England. Was this the same Solomon Martin? Anderson apparently did not see these last two records as he asserted that there was no trace of Solomon Martin in New England after 1662. Supporting this view of Solomon's return to New England is his apparent appearance as a proprietor of Andover at a town vote taken in 1681 and reviewed in 1702.[6] These 1680 and 1684 transactions do not appear in the Essex County deeds search for 1640-1799 also available through familysearch.org.

Death

After the above date 25 March 1662, probably in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, but there is no record.[4]

February 9, 1662 [citation needed]. This could be so if actually 1662/3 Feb. 9, 1651/2 Wrong

Several additions have been made to the Biography which Distort the profile?

The year 1607 England based on Age 28 in 1635. is shown in the above image, Hotten's List of Immigrants. Cited below. The year 1610 - 1635 does not result in an age of 28 years at disembarkation in New England. (should be Removed) Daughter of Thomas Harris and Cordelia Gyll, should not be recorded, Those folks were of Maldon Essex, were if not Aristocrats, Landed Gentle folk. The Farnham's of Rochester or ultimately Southampton. were Common Folk Barber Surgeon- John Kytson is another brick wall? Immigration: From the Book Genealogy of The Farnham Family, By Rev J.M.W. Unknown-364463 and Kytson-3 appear to represent the same person because: merges pending for spouse and child
Two things.

Death date ?? Where did that date come from? Was it a typo for after 25 March 1662?

Alice's Maiden name?? I haven't found anything that gave her a maiden name or parents, -- not Kytson or Harris. Anybody have a source for this alleged maiden name?

Doug, Please clarify. Are you saying that this Alice (wikiID Harris-5886) should not have had Alice Martin or Alice Unknown merged into her? Therefore, neither of these marriages is attributed to the correct wife?

The Alice and Ralph pair on my tree had four children; Mary Farnum 1628 – 1712, Thomas Farnum 1631 – 1686, Ralph Jr 1633 – 1691 and Sarah 1634 - ?. If my Alice Unknown shouldn't have become Alice Harris, that would explain why Alice Harris' children are different. It would also explain how my Alice Unknown who I thought married Ralph Farnum became FarnHams.

I'm not even sure how this merge occurred although the history says it happened this past January. I haven't any recollection of it. Of course, my memory can't be counted on to remember that. Chalk it up to another of those "cognitive issues".

My file ends with Alice. Ralph Farnham (born abt 1603) married Alice ? (born 1607) in England before 1628. She subsequently married Soloman Martin in 1648.

Alicia Harris Parents Thomas Harris and Cordielia Gyll were at their estate in Maldon, Essex Alicia's DOB 1610, She was 25 in 1635, this not the family Ralph Farnham married into. Ralph was a "barber" commoner, Russell C Farnham states Alice Farnham, AKA Alice Unknown, Alice Martin, or Alice Harris on the voyage spring of 1635 Solomon Martin was a seaman, being 13 years younger than Alice Farnham 28 years makes him 15 years. There is no record of him landing on the 2nd June 1635 in Boston. Mass. it is said of Alice Farnham that she new of the Martin family. could she have been related to Soloman Martin, Perhaps, how in 1648, did they suddenly meet and marry after the death of Mary Pindar during child birth, Soloman Martins Wife, could Alice Unknowns. maiden name be Martin.
