Research Note
Numerous Ancestry family trees list Joanna's surname as Potter; however, there are no sources or documents to show or prove that Joanna's surname was Potter. Joanna's surname is not given in any of the records in Shelby county, Alabama. No records have been located so far in Tennessee that show where John and Joanna Armstrong lived in Tennessee before coming to Shelby county, Alabama.
Biography
Joanna was born about 1782 based on her age in the 1850 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama in the household of her husband, John Armstrong. The 1850 Federal census gives Joanna's place of birth as South Carolina.[1] The maiden surname of Joanna is currently unknown.
Joanna and John Armstrong were possibly married in Tennessee about 1811.
Joanna died sometime after the 1850 Federal census and before the 1860 Federal census, as she does not appear in the 1860 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama in the household of her husband, John Armstrong.[2]
