Research Notes

According to Census records, Amos was living in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, in 1850 with a Dosia, age 40 or 44[1] [in 1860 she was 50, in 1870 she was 65]. In an age of common illiteracy, census ages were frequently a few years off, plus or minus. Sometimes ages, birth places, and other information could have been given by children in the household or even by neighbors. Exact dates and ages were often neither of great importance nor accurately recorded in early America. Nancy Lackey was living in Talladega County, Alabama, in 1850, with daughter, Kiziah, age 16. Had Amos and Nancy divorced, and Amos married again? Thus far no record found to verify a divorce nor any record of a marriage to Dosia or Theodosia.

He is still living in Oktibbeha in 1860,[2] but by 1870 Dosia is living alone in Alcorn County, Mississippi.[3] Based on census records from 1850 to 1870, he probably died between 9 Aug 1860 and 8 Aug 1870.

Several sites have his death as 12 Dec 1843, which actually is the date his son, Amos Burrel, married Sarah Branch.
