Roy Blanchard Lackey was born September 29, 1896 in Kingman, Kingman County, Kansas. He was the son of Fred and Hattie A. Lackey. When he registered for the WWI Draft, they recorded him as tall with a medium build, with gray eyes and red hair. [1] [2]
When Roy was about 13, his family was in Arkansas City, Cowley County, Kansas. But, when he registered for the draft in June 1918, they were in Kay County, Oklahoma, where Roy was working for the Carter Oil Company in Blackwell, Oklahoma. By 1920, the family had moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where Roy was an “Oil Driller.” [3] [4]
Sometime in 1921, Roy took a wife, Mildred A. Lackey. It’s possible she was Mildred A. Greene, but more research is needed. Mrs. Roy B. Lackey appeared in the local Lawrence newspaper as the winner of a best recipe contest.
In 1930, Roy and Mildred were in Wakarusa, Douglas County, Kansas (Lawrence is partially in the township of Wakarusa). Roy was a truck driver at the time. [5] In 1940, he was farming in Wakarusa. Sometime before 1939 he had taken for his second wife, Faith Olmsted. She was the daughter of Archibald and Ruth (Dudley) Olmsted of Wakarusa. Roy and Faith had one child, Mary Carolee Lackey Kip (1939-1993). [6] [7]
Roy Lackey died on January 19, 1960 in Lawrence, Kansas.
