Notes

General: Records show that Benjamin came to Christian County about 1805. Records of Lancaster District of SC record Benjamin there until 1800. This family group is unproven and has been made by study of later records of Christian and Trigg Counties in KY. Benjamin d. in Carroll County, TN and left a will there. He also left a will in Christian County, KY. I believe that Benjamin is a product of the second generation of Va. Ladds' - The link that John & Mary (Crew) Ladd is the parents of Benjamin is not proven and temporary; and only done for convenience of future research.

Index to Will Book A Carroll co. Tenn. 1822-1865 Ladd, Benjamine 8-9 Will signed 19th day of January 1827, mentions wife Sarah, son Elijah, daughter Susannah Isom & Martha, Nancy Cammel. Edward Ladd is mentioned but no relationship. Slave girl Susannah and her children to be raised by Edward S ? Ladd. One negro girl named, Mary & Mowning, one negro man named Lewis. Executors - Elisha Ladd, Wm. H. Bigham. Witnessed by Martha Bigham & L. Y. ? Bigham, Matthew Bigham. Notorized by J.P. William Patton.

Note: Susan Lad m. Edmond Isom 22 May 1817 in Caldwell Co., Ky. All evidence points to the fact that this Benjamin Ladd is the Benajmin Ladd Sr. who came to Christian County Kentucky ca. 1805 from Lancaster District S.C. _________ From Cato mailing list: Continuing our Ladd findings Trigg Co Ky Deed bk A pg 98,99 24 Mar 1821- Know all men presents, that I Benjiman Ladd Sr of the county of Trigg and commonwealth of Ky for in consideration and sum of two hundred and fifty dollars to me in hand paid by Sally Johnston, my daughter, wife of charles Johnston of Caldwell Co, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have this day, granted, bargained, and sold and do by these presents grant, bargain, sell and confirm unto the sd Sally Johnstone, one certain negro girl named Emery of about the age of ten yrs, to the sole benefit and behoof of her and her heirs forever. In witness where of I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 24th day of March 1821 /s/ Benjiman (B) his mark Ladd Witness Ben P Campbell Edward B Ladd Trigg Co, to wit Clerk's office 21st May 1821 The foregoing bill of sale from Benjiman Ladd to Sally Johnston was on this day produced to me William Cannon Clerk of the county aforesaid, and acknowledged, by said Ladd to be his act and deed, hand and seal for the purposes therein, and the same was ordered to record. In testimony whereof, and that the same together with this certificate are truly recorded in my office of said county court, I have set my hand Will Cannon

Christian Co finally open up the Woodruff files to the public and in the marriage file we found the following marriage security bond. Know all men by these presents that we Henry Cato, Charley Johnson are held firmly bound unto his excellency, Charley Scott Esquire governor of kentucky . This was dated 15th day of Jan 1810 The condition of the above obligation was for Henry Cato and Polly Ladd marriage.

I now believe that this witness, Charley Johnson, husband of Sally Ladd, who was the daughter of Benjiman Sr, is Polly Ladd's brother-in-law

  • NOTE* We also found today that Benjiman Ladd Senior married Sarah F Bigham in Caldwell Co and that his name on the marriage bond is Benjiman Ladd Sr but on the certificate it shows him as Francis ladd. he appointed William h Bigham as one of his executors in his will and two other Bigham's were witnesses. We believe that these Bigham on the will may be Sarah's children by her former marriage since there is a record on the back of the marriage bond that states that both he and Sarah had been previously married
