He removed with his father, soon after the revolution, from Deerfield, NH to Mt Vernon, ME. He left his father at Mt Vernon and went to Augusta, ME where he completed his education with Rev Payson Stone, an Orthodox clergyman, intending to become a minister, but changed his mind and engaged in business as a merchant, adding mills and shipping interests as the country improved. He did large manufacturing for the times, in sawing lumber, in carding and dressing cloth, in grinding grain, and in farming. He built and owned a line of packets, which ran from Maine to the St Marks River, Wakulla Co, Florida. In 1832 he was interested in an extensive mercantile business, having a branch in Florida, where he died of yellow fever in 1835, just as he was ready to return to his home in Augusta, ME. He was a stockholder in the first woolen factory that was operated in Maine.
