On the 24th of July 1651, John Ladd of London, mariner aged 28 gave a deposition that he was Master of the Samuel at Carlisle Bay in April 1651 when sugar loaded by Robert Arundell was tken off by Lieutenant-Colonel James Drax and put on board a Dutch ship.[1]
This John Ladd may very well be the John Ladd that later settled in Virginia. Many a mariner was able to claim land and do so.
John Ladd was born around 1623, probably in England. He is shown in Virginia Oct. 7, 1653. [2] He settled in Charles City County, Virginia and married first, Bethsheba Lovett, daughter of Lancaster and Ann Lancaster. She died c. 1673. John married second, Mary. He had six children. [3] John bought land May 25, 1673 in Lynnhaven Parish[4]
He was granted a tract of land at Lynhaven Parish, Lower Norfolk Co., Virginia on May 25, 1673. He is probably a relative of John Ladd who settled in Burlington, New Jersey in 1678. He had two sons, William, who married Huldah Binford on June 18,1701; and Amos[5]
John Ladd, son of Nicholas and Ellen Ladd never left England. To wit: Regarding the ancestry of "John Ladd the Immigrant"said died 1680 in Virginia. Most of the many Ladd researchers believe that he was John Ladd bap. 7 Aug 1636 Kent, the son of Nicholas Ladd and Ellen Pemble.. What I have discovered from the information in the Ladd Wills of Kent, is that he cannot be the son of Nicholas Ladd and Ellen Pemble. Firstly the Nicholas Ladd with the Will in 1699 is not the Nicholas who married Ellen Pemble. The correct Will for Nicholas Ladd with wife Ellen Pemble was written on 29 Aug 1682 probate on 10 May 1685. Nicholas was buried in Hawkinge 15 Apr 1685 yeoman from Poulton. He names his wife as Ellen, and children as - Nicholas, Thomas and John and daughters Judeth wife of George Tayler, and Ellen wife of William Badcock. He gives his son John all his stock and crop on the farm, and names him as the sole Executor. His son John Ladd lived in Standen, Hawkinge, and left a Will proved in 1703 wherein he mentions his brothers Nicholas and Thomas and his sister Ellen wife of William Badcock. Also "John the Immigrant" cannot be the son of Nicholas Ladd of Swingfield with the Will proven in 1699.His son John was still alive and living in Kent as he names his sons John and Benjamin as Executors of his Will. John died in 1714 in Kent also leaving a Will.[6]
1705 Quit Rent Roll for Virginia lists William Ladd in Henrico county.
Son of John & Mary LADD. He married Huldah BINFORD on 18 JUN 1701. Contributed 150# of tobacco toward building a Quaker meeting house on 9 MAR 1700. Chosen "overseer" of Weyanoke Meeting in 1721. Served as a Quaker "minister" for 25 years at the Weyanoke Meeting House in Charles City Co., VA. Quakers refused to pay taxes which supported "hireling priests" and were subjected to property seizures. William I suffered the seizure of a male slave & 300# of tobacco on 3 DEC 1726. His son John suffered the seizure of his feather bed & household goods on 2 AUG 1726. William I acquired 500A in Henrico Co., VA on the north side of the James River on 16 JUN 1714 for 50 shillings (2 pounds, 10 shillings). On 5 NOV 1715 he sold 125A in Henrico Co. to Thomas MURRELL, Sr for 2000# of tobacco. He sold a further 200A to Thomas MURRELL, Jr in AUG 1717 for 2000# of tobacco. He sold the last of his Henrico Co. property on 1 NOV 1731, 40A known as "The Great Slash Divident". He died on his plantation at Weyanoke in Charles City Co., VA.
The following is an extract from the Diary of John Fothergill, a minister of the Society of Friends in England, (Quakers) , who visited this country and William Ladd. "In 1721, the 23 of the 6 month, (meaning June 23rd) we had a meeting at Widow Butler's house, to which came several soberly behaved people. We came back from thence to Robert Honicut's, and had a meeting near his house. The nest day we crossed James River to William Ladd's, where a small meeting is usually kept. The 27th we had a pretty large meeting at Carles, and lodged at Thomas Pleasants; on the 28th, with some friends, we rode up the woods to a place called Dover, (Dover Mines, in Goochland Co., VA,) where a few friends live, we lodged that night with one John Parsons; on the Ist 7 month we had a meeting at a French settlement called Manikintown, lodged with Daniel Groom; on the 2nd we went to the monthly meeting at Edward Mosby's - lodged that night with John Johnson, at the swamp. The 4th we went to Black Creek - lodged with Gerard Ellyson, and had another meeting; 5th had another meeting on the Pamunkey River; came back to Gerard Ellyson's, and had another meeting the 6th at Black Creek; 7th went to a meeting at William Ladd's again lodged at John Crew's; and went again to a meeting at Carles - lodged at T. Pleasant's'."
