Biography

Elizabeth Laird was born to Joseph C. and Eleanor Morison Laird in Aberdenshire, Scotland in 1802. Her parents brought her and her siblings to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1817, then to Ohio in 1821.

Elizabeth married Thomas Claton, Jr. (aka Clayton) on October 12, 1820, in Warren County, Ohio. Elizabeth had 16 children, few who reached maturity. They lost three babies while in Ohio, all buried at Deerfield Cemetery, aka Union Township Cemetery, S. Lebanon, Warren Co., Ohio.

James was also born there in 1822, and Mary was born there or in Indiana in 1825. A picture of the house they built in Lewis Creek, Shelby Co., Indiana is shown on Elizabeth's husband's page. The Clatons moved to Flat Rock, Shelby County, Indiana after several years.

Elizabeth, her husband Thomas, and some other members of the family are buried in Patterson Cemetery, Lewis Creek, Jackson Twp., Shelbyville, Indiana.

  1. Joseph Washington Claton (1829-7/11/1905) married Martha Phelps Apr. 23, 1850. (She died Feb. 9, 1858.) He was County Auditor and a county commissioner in Davis Co., Iowa in 1877. The cornerstone of former Davis Co. Courthouse of 1852 is now set in the wall of the jury room of the current courthouse. It has names of the three county commissioners, including Thomas Claton, Jr.[1] J. W. Claton was buried July 12 in Bloomfield, Iowa. Cause of death: Apoplexy with resulting paralysis of left side; duration: 13 days. Contributory: Uremia; duration 6 days[2]
