Notes (1) In the 1850 Federal Census, Joseph is listed with his parents in Clinton County, Iowa, Liberty Township. He is listed as 10 years old, meaning he would have been born in 1840. All other records list his birth year as 1842. The 1870 Census lists Joseph's birthplace as Indiana. He was born in either Wayne City, IN, or Carroll City, IN. The family was in Wayne City in 1840 and Carroll City in 1843. he moved to Hale Twp. with his parents and lived there until the family moved to Grundy County, IA in 1881. oseph was a farmer in Jones City, IA, and Grundy County. All of the death reports say however, that LIscomb, in Marshall County, IA, which border Grundy Co., was their home town previous to Algona. Both Joseph and Eunice are buried in Liscomb. The family moved to Algona, Kossuth County, IA, in 1893. They lived two years near Irvington on the old Haggard farm. Then they purchased a farm in Plum Creek. After two years they sold this farm and moved to Algona in 1888. Joseph worked for his brother James R. in the furnituire business and carried the mails for a few years before purchasing the Hall Hotel on State Street where the Paine Drug Store stood in 1913. (Near the post ofice). He renamed it the Algona Hotel. In 1910 this building was torn down. He then bought the Tennant Hotel building on South Thorington Street and reopened it as the Old Algona Hotel. In 1913 Theo Carroll leased the hotel. Joseph and Eunice lived in the North Annex wing of the building until his death in 1915. Liscom is the home of Eunice's relatives, the Thurstons. Joseph is buried next to Phoebe Thurston, his wife's mother. Date of funeral Marsh 31, 1915. His son, Warren E. Laird, was the undertaker.
