Seraphin La Londe, of Sault Ste, Marie, Michigan, is a genuine landmark of this locality, and is the oldest settler in point of residence now living here who is not a native of this county. Mr. La Londe has resided at this place since 1826 and has been an eye witness to its growth from a hamlet containing only three white families to its present size and beauty.
It was when a child and with his father Francis La Londe that our subject came to Sault Ste. Marie, coming here from Manitoba.
His father Francis La Londe had resided in Manitoba for ten years previous to that time, employed as a voyager for the Hudson Bay Fur company, having entered their service in Lower Canada some years before. He was born of French parents in Quebec, in 1767, and was a farmer till going into the employ of the above named company.
His father was transferred to the Red river country, where his son, Seraphin, was born May 12, 1822.
Our subjects mother was before her marriage Miss Josette Marlow, and he was seventeenth of eighteen children. The only ones beside himself of this remarkable family who survive are Mrs. Barbeau and Mrs. Daziell.
